Lone Star College-Houston North Victory
In 1965, the Houston Independent School District proposed the creation of a community college district in north Harris County. The community college district would have been coterminous with the HISD, and would have included Houston Community College and North Harris Community College. The proposal was rejected by Harris County voters.
In the 1970s, Houston Community College expanded its north Houston campus, and North Harris Community College began offering classes at Klein Forest High School. The community college presence in north Harris County continued to grow in the 1980s with the establishment of a campus of Lee College in Baytown and the development of Montgomery College’s north Harris County campus. In 1989, the Texas Legislature authorized the creation of the Lone Star College System, which merged North Harris Community College and Montgomery County Community College.
Lone Star College-Houston North opened in August 1993 as a two-year college offering university transfer, health sciences, and technical programs. In its first year, the college enrolled 3,600 students in credit and non-credit courses.
