What Should You Put Under Artificial Grass

One of the most common questions we get asked about artificial turf installation is what you should put under artificial grass. The base layer, weed barrier and infill are extremely important parts of the turf installation process and the quality of materials used makes a huge difference in the enjoyability and life of your turf. Our turf advisors are experts on the various options and the premium products we use and always talk through these details with our clients.

When we begin an installation, the first step of  installation is excavating the area as needed. We then distribute and compact base thoroughly, being sure to maintaining an existing grade for drainage. The base we use is crushed rock or decomposed granite. We then lay a weed barrier in order to reduce weed growth.

After the turf is installed, we immediately place infill throughout turf area and then power broom the turf to work infill granules into the base of turf. This process helps to weigh down turf and create anti-microbial barrier.

We believe infill is one of the most important parts of the installation process. Infill helps to prevent stains, odors and turf deterioration. Southern Turf Co. uses only premium infill brands. The anti-microbial properties of these products offer extra protection for your investment.

The purposes of infill are:

  • To weigh down the backing of the turf
  • To add ballast by helping to support the fibers against matting down and the resulting wear patterns
  • To protect the backing of the turf

Not all infills are created equally. Our premium infill options provide unparalleled health and safety advantages for people, pets, and playgrounds. Their extra antimicrobial protection help to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew.

Before starting the artificial turf installation process, we always recommend meeting with an expert and walking the space to discuss all of the available options and a plan to make sure you get exactly what you envision.
